Curtis Byrd

Let’s work together to Make a Difference in Santa Rosa in 2014!

Today, I am asking for your support as we launch our campaign for Santa Rosa City Council 2014! As a candidate for the City Council, I have the desire to be part of something giving rise to the power of community collaboration. Cities become prosperous and generate sustainable living wage jobs through innovation when governments, educational institutions, businesses and the community at-large work together toward economic vitality. It is my belief that open government fosters transparency and accountability of information, which contributes to innovative ideas and creates a shared direction that translates into economic vitality.

As a native Santa Rosan, I will work toward making a difference to benefit our entire community. I understand the diverse needs of Santa Rosa and will continue my commitment to the work that lies ahead. As an experienced leader and a longtime resident of Santa Rosa, I am prepared to make the tough budget decisions to create sustainable jobs, improve our roads, green up our parks, support the annexation of Roseland, provide clean power to ratepayers, and clean up code violations.

But, I can’t accomplish any of this without you lending a helping hand! Please consider getting involved. Here is how you can help:

Mrs. Vivian Coffee Endorses Curtis Byrd for Santa Rosa City Council!

Dear Friends,

We are fired up and ready to Make a Difference in Santa Rosa!

Over the past several weeks, the campaign has continued to make amazing progress in all areas: endorsements, volunteers and contributions.  With your amazing rally ‘round, support has come from all sectors including elected officials, appointed leaders, business owners, faith-based community leaders and wonderful friends like Mrs. Vivian Coffee.  The Coffee House is named after her late husband, Rev. James E. Coffee.

This past Saturday, I spent time at Moorland Avenue and witnessed the rebuilding of the tribute in memory of Andy Lopez. On Tuesday, I attended the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors Community hearing and the Santa Rosa City Council meeting. The October tragedy continues to impact our community in many ways. I hope we can continue working together toward solutions that protect our citizens as well as our law enforcement, as recommended by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the Sonoma County Grand Jury.

Let’s continue to keep up the good work and maintain the momentum all the way to November 4, 2014.  You can help us keep up this marvelous progress by joining us at the Campaign Kickoff Party.  Here are the details:

Three Simple Words for 2014

Andy Lopez

Memorial for Andy Lopez on Moorland Avenue

Jesse Love — pictured on the front page of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat on Monday, December 30th — truly lived and embodied three simple words: “Making a Difference!”

As a young a man growing up and attending Community Baptist Church — where Mr. Love was a founding member and served as a Deacon — I watched him demonstrate patience, humility and a Christian attitude.

He was never without a smile on his face and love in his heart. He drove his white over blue 1964 two-door Pontiac Bonneville, dressed in a suit, white shirt and tie, and always wore shined shoes.  When asked how he was doing, he always responded,  “Happy, Thankful and Blessed!”

Jesse Love was married 56 years to Victoria, lived all his life in the same house, drove the same car since 1964, lived his life as an example of grace and love, and carried humility for all humanity in his heart.

I will miss his example.  He truly Made a Difference in Santa Rosa and beyond, and he especially made a difference for me.

I did not have the opportunity to meet Andy Lopez, but his death has made a difference in my life. Today, my mother and I left a candle in Mr. Love’s memory for Andy Lopez, at the site of Lopez’s fatal shooting on Moorland Avenue.

I pray that our local law enforcement will read the historical recommendations by the United States Commission on Civil Rights and the Sonoma County Grand Jury and act with humility for all humanity to benefit the entire community. The recommendations were formulated to protect all citizens as well as law enforcement. Citizens review, community-oriented policing strategies, new training, vehicle and lapel cameras will truly “Make a Difference” for the entire community.

Please join me in honoring the memory of Jesse Love and Andy Lopez, and “Make a Difference” for Santa Rosa in 2014.
